This song is my favorite.
It was sung by Talat Mehmood for the Bimal Roy directed movie “ Sujata”, a 1959 productions.
Sujata was based on a story by famous Bengali novelist Subodh Ghosh and it depicted the conflict of inter-caste relations. Bimal Roy gave this movie a fine touch and it remained as one of his finest. Sujata was afterwards made in Bengali by Pinaki Mukherjee. Aparna Sen played the title role. She failed miserably. Her acting and dialogue delivery was too much sophisticated for a native lower caste girl.
Sunil Dutt and Nutan made formidable and successful pair from this film. Later Madras based production houses produced so many hit movies with Sunilji and Nutanji.
There is story behind the recording of the song. This song was supposed to be sung by Rafi Sab. At the time of picturization of the song, he was out of India. Bimal Roy was ready with the set to shoot it. At that time Music Directors used dummy voice to record only for the purpose filming the song. SDji called Talatji and commented “This is my pet baby, don’t Kill it”
Talatji gave every thing he had to make the song alive. His silky voice gave sweetness to this love song.
It is told that after recording Talatjee commented “It was my baby too, No body except demons kill his own child”
When Rafi Sab returned, SD Jee wanted to rerecord the song. When he heard the recording Rafi Sab flatly refused, saying “Talat Sab gave superb rendition, I can never sing this song as lovely as him”. Such was the greatness of Rafi Sab.
Rest is history……
